Reading the Resistor Color Code

Resistor color code chart

It is worth memorizing the following to catch errors in your breadboards:

  • Third Band BLACK or BROWN:  small value – make sure you know why you are using it
  • Third Band RED:                     1K   to  9.1K (kilohms)
  • Third Band ORANGE :         10K   to   91K (10s of kilohms)
  • Third Band YELLOW:        100K   to  910K (100s of kilohms)
  • Third Band BLUE:               Megohms

This list of standard 5% resistor and 10% capacitor values may be helpful in choosing component values in your designs.
